If the gap left after losing upper premolars and molars is not filled, over time the maxillary sinus drops downward and reduces bone height. When an implant is planned, a sinus lift procedure can be performed, depending on the amount of remaining bone, to increase the bone level.
A sinus lift can be performed in two ways:
- Closed sinus lift: A closed sinus lift is performed if 2–3 mm of additional bone is needed for the implant. It can be done in the same session as the implant. Healing is fast, and the time before the prosthesis can be placed on the implant is kept as short as possible.
- Open sinus lift: If the sinus has dropped considerably and more than 2–3 mm of additional bone tissue is needed, the open method is used.
