Adenomyosis: Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment (Adenomyoma)

It occurs when the endometrium, the layer lining the inner cavity of the uterus, grows into the muscle wall of the uterus. Its cause is unknown. It is most often seen in women aged 30–50 who have had at least one pregnancy.

Symptoms of Adenomyosis

While it may cause no symptoms at all in most cases,

  • Prolonged and heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Painful periods
  • It can cause pain during intercourse, and the complaints tend to increase gradually.

Diagnostic Methods

A soft and slightly enlarged uterus during a gynecological examination suggests adenomyosis.

  • Ultrasonography
  • MRI
  • Imaging methods are effective in differential diagnosis.

Treatment Methods

The vast majority of cases do not require treatment. Particularly in patients with heavy bleeding, birth control pills, hormonal intrauterine devices and naproxen-type painkillers are sufficient to control the symptoms. Rarely, surgical removal of the uterus (hysterectomy) may be necessary.
