Cancers of the lip, inside of the mouth, tongue, cheek, base of the tongue, larynx, nasopharynx, pharynx, salivary glands, nose and paranasal sinuses, and neck fall within the specialty of ear, nose and throat (ENT) medicine. They are among the common cancers in the body. Depending on where they originate, they may appear as a mass or cause symptoms such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, a sensation of food sticking when swallowing, nosebleeds or a hard swelling in the neck.

They mostly arise from squamous epithelial cells. In advanced-stage tumors, cancer cells may spread to the lymph nodes in the neck or to distant organs (lungs, bones, liver).

For diagnosis, methods such as a detailed examination, biopsy, computed tomography and/or MRI, and PET-CT are used.
Treatment can be with surgery or radiotherapy. Factors such as the tumor's location, cell type and stage, and the preferences of the patient and surgeon determine the treatment to be applied. An important point is that during surgery, the neck lymph nodes sometimes also need to be removed together with the organ where the tumor originated (neck dissection). In some cases, adjuvant radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy may be required after surgery.
