Sleep Disorders Clinic

Sleep disorders are common, impair sleep and quality of life, and can lead to serious, life-threatening diseases if left untreated.

Sleep disorders are a group of conditions that are common in society, impair the patient’s sleep and quality of life, lead to hard-to-treat and life-threatening diseases if left untreated, and are still not well known by physicians and patients.

At the Sleep Disorders Center of İzmir Can Hastanesi, polysomnography (PSG), the modern method for studying sleep, is performed. The center operates 24 hours a day with a medical director and day and night technicians, and all daytime and nighttime tests are carried out here.

When a patient comes to our hospital, they are first examined by the responsible sleep physician; after preliminary tests related to their condition are performed, it is decided which sleep tests the patient needs. Once this is decided, the patient is referred to the responsible technician to make an appointment and to receive visual information about the procedures. The procedures are explained to the patient visually, and a mask trial is performed for CPAP titration.

Patients are evaluated with overnight polysomnography according to their preliminary diagnosis. The recordings are pre-evaluated by the technician, and the center’s medical director reviews and scores the PSG report. The result is reported. Depending on the diagnosis, the patient is referred to the sleep physician, who presents the treatment options, and a treatment plan is made.

The recordings are pre-evaluated by the technician, and the center’s medical director reviews and scores the PSG report.

When the patient wakes up in the morning, a complete blood count, routine biochemical tests, a pulmonary function test, a chest X-ray, an ECG, hormone tests, chest and Waters’ view X-rays and, if necessary, CT and MRI are requested.

If a sleep-related breathing disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea is detected, the pressure settings of respiratory support devices such as CPAP, BPAP, ASV and AVAPS are determined overnight under PSG, depending on the severity of the condition. This procedure is called CPAP titration and is performed overnight at the sleep center. The PSG report is evaluated in the morning to see at which pressure the respiratory events disappear and breathing normalizes; the device’s treatment pressure is set based on this result, and the patient starts treatment at this pressure.

For other sleep disorders, the treatment methods to be prescribed or applied are determined according to the patient’s characteristics and the severity of the condition, and then applied to the patient.
