The most effective ways to protect ourselves from sunburn, which threatens our comfort and health, are avoiding sun exposure, wearing protective clothing and using broad-spectrum sunscreens. People with sun-sensitive skin in particular need to be even more careful. The most important reason for this is that susceptibility to sunburn is also a genetic indicator of a predisposition to skin cancer. Regular use of sunscreen is therefore very important.
- Especially in the summer months, sun exposure should be reduced between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., when the sun is strongest, and babies younger than 6 months should not be exposed to direct sunlight.
- Wearing sun-protective clothing and a hat is also very helpful. There is also clothing on the market designed for people with sun sensitivity (photosensitivity).
- Regular use of broad-spectrum sunscreens, especially those with SPF 30 or higher, is very important. An important point to note is that these sunscreens should be applied 15–30 minutes before going out in the sun. The aim is to form a protective layer on the skin, and the sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours.
- Even if a sunscreen is labeled water-resistant, it must be reapplied after swimming or sweating.
- In addition to all this, it is very important to increase our daily water intake to prevent the fluid loss that hot weather causes in both the skin and our body as a whole.
