Genital warts: Caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), this infection affects both women and men and is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. It is transmitted through sexual activity, including oral, vaginal and anal sex. The warts are skin-colored or brown and firmer than the surrounding tissue, or sometimes soft and cauliflower-like. In women, the same virus can cause cervical cancer. The virus can be detected by genotyping on a smear sample.

Syphilis: A painless sore with a hard base forms in the genital area. The disease is caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. It is a serious disease. It is detected with a blood test.
