As in FUE, grafts are harvested and implanted one by one; in DHI, the follicles are implanted directly with a Choi Implanter pen, without opening channels.
What Is DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)?
It is also known as “direct hair transplantation.” As in the FUE hair transplant technique, grafts are harvested one by one and implanted one by one. The only difference is that the follicles are implanted directly, without opening channels, using a device called the Choi Implanter pen.
People who want a hair transplant without having their hair shaved in particular prefer the DHI technique.
How Is DHI Hair Transplantation (Choi Pen Technique) Performed?
In the DHI technique, as in FUE, the area accepted as the donor site is trimmed to 1 mm. (There is no need to cut all of the hair.) With the help of micromotor tips suited to the hair’s thickness, hair follicles are harvested one by one, grouped and kept in a special solution. The harvested follicles are loaded into special pens called Choi Implanters and inserted into the hairless skin. Channel opening and follicle placement are done at the same time.
The DHI technique, which is offered at very few centers, requires special expertise and experience. Considering that hair follicles are living cells, they must be loaded into the Choi Implanter pens carefully and without damage, because a damaged follicle will not take.
Advantages of DHI Hair Transplantation
– The transplant can be performed without shortening the hair. This makes it a preferred option, especially for female patients.
– No fluid is injected under the skin, so the patient does not experience swelling or edema.
– No fluid is injected under the skin, so the patient does not experience swelling or edema.
– Because channel opening and placement are done at the same time, the follicles spend much less time outside the body and no grafts are lost.
– Existing hair is not damaged.
– There is less bleeding. Recovery and return to social life are faster.
– Because the channel is only as wide as the Choi Implanter pen, hair can be implanted very densely.
Disadvantages of DHI Hair Transplantation
– Compared with other hair transplant techniques, the DHI method costs more, so the price of the hair transplant is also higher.
– Because the procedure requires great precision and concentration, the person performing a DHI pen-technique hair transplant must have a certain level of experience and training.
– A maximum of 3,000–3,500 grafts can be implanted in one session. For transplants requiring a high number of grafts, other techniques are preferred or the procedure is split over 2 days. This affects the patient’s comfort and also increases the cost.
– A larger technical team is needed than with other techniques, since the follicles must be loaded quickly into the pens and passed to the physician performing the transplant.
