Circumcision is the surgical removal of the fold of skin at the tip of the penis that covers the urinary opening and can lead to infection. According to the World Health Organization, a newborn baby boy can be circumcised after the 12th hour of life.
In the newborn period, circumcision is performed under local anesthesia. Local anesthetic agents are applied around the baby's penis 45 minutes before the procedure to eliminate the sensation of pain. The surgical circumcision takes about 15–20 minutes; the wound is dressed without gauze, the diaper is put on, and the baby can be discharged right away. Unless there is an urgent urological condition, circumcision is not recommended between the ages of 2 and 5, when it may affect the child psychologically. In children over 5, circumcision is usually performed under local anesthesia or, at the family's request, under general anesthesia.
If circumcision is performed under local anesthesia, the child is discharged immediately afterward. Children circumcised under general anesthesia are sent home after 3–4 hours of observation. Small amounts of blood may ooze from the surgical site in the first 24 hours after circumcision; this is nothing to worry about. Fever is not expected after circumcision. In older children, infection may rarely occur at the surgical site if the wound is not dressed properly. Bathing with warm water is allowed from the 5th day. Since the stitches used during the procedure are special dissolvable stitches, there is no need to have them removed.
The most important complication that can develop after circumcision is bleeding that does not stop. If this happens, you should go to a healthcare facility without delay and notify your doctor.
