Overview

Adrenal gland masses are growths that form in the adrenal glands, and most are benign. They are usually found incidentally on imaging performed for another reason. The adrenal glands, which are part of the endocrine system, produce hormones that give instructions to almost every organ and tissue in the body.

Every person has two adrenal glands. Each gland contains two types of tissue: the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla. Tumors that develop in the adrenal cortex are called adrenal adenomas/carcinomas, and tumors that develop in the adrenal medulla are called pheochromocytomas.

Most do not cause symptoms and do not require treatment. Sometimes they may secrete hormones at levels that can cause complications. These hormones are aldosterone and cortisol from the adrenal cortex, and adrenaline from the medulla. Blood and urine tests make it clear whether there is excess hormone secretion.

Treatment and Follow-up

Surgical treatment is recommended for masses found to produce excess hormones, masses that grow by more than 1 cm during 6-month or yearly follow-up, and when the imaging report shows findings suggesting a malignant mass. Masses that are generally smaller than 4 cm, appear benign and do not cause excess hormone release are monitored without surgery.
