Neck Pain and Computer Use

Since we entered the digital age, there has been a marked increase in the number of patients seeing a doctor for neck pain and cervical disc herniation. Laptops and smartphones in particular cause users to keep their heads bent forward for long periods, which leads to loss of the normal neck curve (cervical straightening). When cervical straightening occurs, the muscles at the back of the neck become strained. The surrounding connective tissues also become tense. This condition can be reversed. With long-standing cervical straightening, however, the intervertebral discs also begin to degenerate, which marks the start of the irreversible stage.

In short, neck stiffness, neck pain and cervical disc herniations are all preceded by cervical straightening. If we can prevent cervical straightening or treat it promptly, we can also stop the process that leads to herniation.
