Mastopexy is the lifting, reshaping and contouring of the breasts without reducing their volume.
In most of these patients, the breast skin has stretched and sagged, and the breast tissue has relatively decreased. Age, gravity, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and weight gain and loss cause the breasts to sag and lose their firm appearance. Loss of elasticity causes the skin and the attachments of the breast gland to stretch and lengthen. As the breast tissue descends, fullness is lost in the upper part of the breast. If breast sagging (ptosis) is accompanied by a marked reduction in breast tissue, a breast implant is added to the mastopexy. This is done especially to restore fullness in the upper part of the breast.
Augmentation mastopexy is also preferred for congenital or acquired breast asymmetries. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
As a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight gain and loss, and the effects of gravity, the skin loses its elasticity and the breasts may sag and lose their aesthetic appeal. A breast lift (mastopexy) can give the breast a new, lifted shape. The surgical technique used may vary according to breast size, the degree of sagging, skin elasticity and the surgeon's preferences. In people with mild sagging, an operation around the nipple may be sufficient, whereas in cases of advanced sagging there may also be incisions and stitches in the crease under the breast.
Scars that are more prominent and reddish in the first months fade to white over time, become less visible and usually stay within the lines of a bra or bikini. The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 3 hours; the drains placed afterward are removed the next day. Stitches are removed on days 10–12. Arm movements may be painful for the first few days after surgery. Simple painkillers relieve the patient, and patients can return to their daily activities within a few days.
If the breasts have also become smaller in addition to sagging, silicone breast implants can be placed in the same operation.
