Revision Surgery After Obesity and Metabolic Surgery

General Surgery2 min read

What does revision mean?

Revision, which means making a correction, refers in surgical terminology to converting an operation that is causing various problems into a different operation in order to resolve those problems and improve quality of life.

What is obesity surgery?

Over the last 50 years, the surgical treatment of obesity has been performed with a wide variety of methods that have evolved over time.
The main ones are:

  • Vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG)
  • Vertical gastrectomy
  • Adjustable silastic gastric band (ASGB)
  • Biliopancreatic diversion (BPD)
  • Duodenal switch
  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (GBP)
  • Mini gastric bypass
  • Transit bipartition
  • Sleeve gastrectomy.

Some procedures have given way to methods that are more effective and have lower complication rates, and are no longer performed. All surgical methods work by restricting food intake, and some work by both restricting intake and reducing absorption. The types and risks of complications of each are similar but differ.

Is revision necessary in obesity and metabolic surgery?

It is well known that obesity and metabolic surgery cures many accompanying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, psychological and social problems, sleep apnea syndrome and osteoarthritis. All the methods used can be thought of as procedures that narrow or reroute the stomach and sometimes the small intestine. For this reason, by their very nature, these operations can lead in the long term to conditions such as reflux, bile reflux into the stomach, iron-deficiency anemia due to malabsorption, vitamin deficiencies, osteoporosis, excessive weight loss, insufficient weight loss and weight regain. These conditions can usually be corrected with diet and medication, but in rare cases they require further surgery.

Are revision surgeries risky?

Of course, like all operations, revision surgeries carry risks. These risks include those common to all gastrointestinal surgery, and since it is a second operation, they also stem from conditions such as adhesions between abdominal organs. Naturally, they can also vary depending on the patient's individual condition. For example, a patient with excessive weight loss may be malnourished. Nutrient and vitamin deficiencies affect surgery.

However, the operation is performed after the patient's preoperative condition has been carefully evaluated, the operation has been planned following preoperative supplement therapy, and the risks have been minimized. The hospital's appropriate equipment and the experience and skill of its staff, especially the surgeon, are the most important factors. Revision surgery after obesity and metabolic surgery, which can be performed at only a limited number of centers, is proudly performed at Özel Can Hastanesi, one of our city's distinguished hospitals.
