ELBOW FRACTURES:
An elbow fracture is a break in one or more of the three bones that form the elbow joint. These bones are the radius (the bone that runs from the elbow to your wrist on the thumb side), the ulna (the bone that runs from the elbow to the wrist on the other side) and the humerus. (the bone that connects your elbow to your shoulder)
There are various types of elbow fractures, and one of the most common is the supracondylar fracture, which occurs in the humerus just above your elbow. An epicondylar fracture is a fracture of the bony prominence on the inner or outer side of the elbow.
Elbow fractures can be closed or open. A closed fracture is one that does not break through the skin. In an open fracture, the broken bone causes an opening in the skin, leaving this area vulnerable to infection.
Symptoms;
- Severe pain,
- A bony protrusion pushing against the skin around the elbow,
- Deformity of the elbow,
- Tenderness, bruising or swelling in the elbow.
Causes;
- Trauma
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Sports injuries.
- Patients with stress fractures and patients with osteoporosis are also in the at-risk group.
Treatment:
After a detailed examination and radiological tests at the Can Hastanesi Orthopedics Clinic, the treatment appropriate for your clinical condition will be determined. Immobilizing and stabilizing the joint is an important approach. If a fracture is found in one or more places, surgery will also be needed. Once the bone has healed, you will be placed on an individualized physical therapy program by our Physical Therapy Clinic, part of our multidisciplinary team, to strengthen the relevant muscle groups.
BICEPS TENDON RUPTURE AND TEAR:
A biceps tendon rupture is a complete break of the tendon that attaches your biceps muscle to your shoulder or elbow. A tear can also occur at these points, either completely or partially. Both conditions are extremely painful.
Injuries such as ruptures or tears can occur when falling on the arm, while moving or bending your arm, or while carrying a heavy object.
Age and sex are also important risk factors. It is more common in people aged 30 and over and in men. Smoking and using corticosteroid medications also increase the risk.
Symptoms;
- A sound coming from your elbow at the time of injury,
- Weakness in the elbow or shoulder,
- Wounds and bruising on the elbow,
- A bulge in the upper arm,
- Severe pain in the elbow or shoulder,
- A feeling of a gap at the front of your elbow,
- Difficulty moving your wrist up and down.
Treatment:
When you come to the Can Hastanesi Orthopedics Clinic, your doctor will evaluate your clinical findings and, after a detailed history and physical examination, determine the treatment method that is right for you. Regaining your arm strength and full arm function will be possible with successful surgery and a physical therapy program.
ELBOW TENDINITIS (TENNIS ELBOW – GOLFER'S ELBOW)
Swinging a tennis racket or golf club may look easy, but the mechanism behind it is quite complex. Your elbow consists of muscles, ligaments and tendons that hold its three bones together. Elbow tendinitis occurs when an inflammatory reaction develops in the muscles and tendons of the forearm.
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) mostly involves damage to the tendon of a muscle on the outer side of the elbow called the extensor carpi radialis brevis. Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis), on the other hand, affects the tendons of the muscles that bend the wrist and fingers (the flexor-pronator group), which attach to the inner side of the elbow. Repetitive movements or sports activities over time accelerate this process, and the supporting tendons loosen.
This tendinitis is an overuse injury. Racket sports, which require constantly gripping an object, increase the risk. It usually occurs in your dominant arm, but it can also affect the other arm.
Symptoms;
- Pain in the elbow,
- Weak grip,
- Burning and tenderness in the elbow that gradually worsen over time.
Treatment:
When you come to the İzmir Can Hastanesi Orthopedics Clinic, our specialist will take your history and then perform a physical examination, accompanied by certain tests, to confirm the diagnosis. Many patients can recover with non-surgical methods. At this stage, patients can also be supported with physical therapy. If your symptoms persist for months despite appropriate treatment, surgery may be considered. Your doctor will determine the most suitable treatment option and create a treatment plan tailored to you. When you return to your normal daily life and sports after treatment, your doctor will also give you recommendations to prevent the condition from recurring.
