Don't let your shoulder restrict your movement or reduce your quality of life.
The shoulder is one of the most complex and most mobile joints in the body. However, we usually don't pay attention to our shoulder until we feel that something is wrong. Even in its simplest form, shoulder pain appears when you raise your hand, try to reach high shelves or comb your hair, and can cause significant pain.
Whether the cause of your shoulder pain is a rotator cuff tear, bursitis, tendinitis or a shoulder injury, the İzmir Özel Can Hastanesi Orthopedics Clinic is here to help you get rid of the pain and improve your quality of life.
Using facilities supported by the latest technology, our Orthopedics Clinic works with all its resources to reach the most accurate diagnosis and create a treatment plan tailored to you.
Conditions:
Rotator Cuff Tear
The rotator cuff is the name of a group of muscles that keeps your shoulder joint in place and stable, helps you lift your arm and rotates your upper arm.
When the rotator cuff tears, one or more tendons separate from the bone of the upper arm because of the tear. A rotator cuff tear is an extremely painful condition that will prevent activities such as combing your hair, putting a bag on your shoulder or reaching for something high up.
Causes:
People who frequently have to raise their arms overhead (in daily activities or at work) are prone to rotator cuff tears. Over time, it can also develop through repetitive movements such as swinging a tennis racket or painting a wall with a brush. It can also occur in people who exercise indoors during the winter (on a treadmill, for example) and then suddenly start playing tennis in the spring, as this muscle group becomes overloaded. Other causes of this condition include lifting a very heavy load, using your arms more than usual, doing decorating work, falling on your arm or having a shoulder dislocation.
Symptoms:
- Dull pain in the shoulder when trying to sleep at night,
- Shoulder pain when trying to lift something,
- Pain spreading from the outer side of the shoulder toward the upper arm,
- Weakness in the arm,
- Hearing a grinding sound when you raise or rotate your arm,
- Feeling as if your shoulder is locked.
Treatment:
When you visit our Orthopedics Clinic, our experienced physicians with extensive knowledge in this field will begin assessing your condition by asking about the onset and location of your pain and how its severity has changed over time. After the physical examination, imaging methods will be used to rule out causes such as arthritis, calcification, bone fragments or injury. After all these diagnostic steps, your doctor will determine the treatment approach that suits you and start treatment right away with our multidisciplinary team approach.
LABRAL TEAR OF THE SHOULDER:
Together with the entire upper limb, your shoulder is one of the joints you use most and one of the most mobile joints for everything you do in life. This is exactly why your shoulder stability is highly vulnerable, and a heavy load is placed on the area called the labrum. This area consists of a thick band of cartilage. When throwing a ball or lifting a load, it keeps your shoulder joint in place. If a tear develops here, there will not be enough tissue to act as a cushion between the bones, and the stability of your shoulder joint will be impaired.
Causes:
It occurs due to causes such as trying to break a fall, shoulder dislocation, movements that strain your arm and lifting a heavy load. Ball sports and strenuous sports are another cause of this condition.
Symptoms:
- Shoulder pain during movements in which you raise your hand above head level or move it in front of or behind your body,
- Loss of sensation in the shoulder,
- A feeling that your shoulder has slipped out or become loose,
- Shoulder dislocation,
- Hearing sounds during shoulder movements,
- Shoulder pain that may occur at night or during the day.
Treatment:
When you visit our İzmir Can Hastanesi Orthopedics Clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of a labral tear, our successful and experienced doctors in this field will take a diagnostically meaningful history by asking about the onset of your complaints, how they have progressed over time and how they relate to your movements. The diagnosis is made using the state-of-the-art imaging methods at our clinic, and diagnostic and treatment approaches with modern arthroscopic techniques are available.
Throughout every stage of recovery, we take a multidisciplinary approach with support from our physical therapy clinic to help you step into a trouble-free, pain-free life.
FROZEN SHOULDER (ADHESIVE CAPSULITIS):
Your shoulder is made up of connective tissue, bones, ligaments and tendons. In the condition called frozen shoulder, the connective tissue around the shoulder tightens, causing symptoms in which your movements become difficult and painful.
Frozen shoulder can develop naturally when you do not use your shoulder joint. This may be due to a previous injury or a condition that restricts your movement. A previous stroke or surgery may also have caused it because you were unable to move normally. Age and sex are additional risk factors. It is more common in people over 40 and in women. Interestingly, frozen shoulder tends to affect the side of the arm you do not predominantly use rather than your dominant arm. Your risk increases if you have had an arm or shoulder injury before. Patients with diabetes and thyroid disease are also at higher risk. At the İzmir Can Hastanesi Orthopedics Clinic, our qualified specialists will determine the treatment method that suits you and carry out your treatment with full technical equipment and a multidisciplinary working system.
SHOULDER FRACTURES:
We use our shoulders a great deal in daily life. From trying to break a fall with our arm to carrying heavy loads after grocery shopping and taking part in sports, our shoulders are constantly at work.
The shoulder is formed by the union of three bones that make up the shoulder girdle: the upper arm bone called the humerus, the shoulder blade (scapula) and the collarbone (clavicle). When any of these bones breaks, you feel severe pain that restricts your shoulder movements.
The most important causes of fractures in this area are trauma during sports activities and falling onto the shoulder or arm. When a fracture occurs, a sound is usually heard and the break can be felt. These types of fractures are more common in children and young adults. Fractures of the top of the humerus (upper arm bone), on the other hand, are especially common in adults over 65. Fractures of the shoulder blade are rare because this bone is protected by the chest and the surrounding muscles.
SHOULDER BURSITIS AND TENDINITIS:
This condition, also called shoulder impingement, develops with use-related irritation and inflammation of the tendons in the shoulder area. The rotator cuff and the muscles and tendons in this group are responsible for keeping the top of your upper arm bone stable within the socket of your shoulder.
- Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid-filled cushions in the shoulder joint.
- Tendinitis: Irritation and inflammation of the tendons in the area called the rotator cuff.
These symptoms usually appear after injuries to the shoulder area. Similarly, they can develop with long-term repetitive movements (sports, gardening, playing golf or tennis) . If you have taken part in sports that require raising your arm above head level, or household tasks such as painting and decorating, you are at risk for these disorders. People who do heavy work such as construction are also at occupational risk. The risk of bursitis and tendinitis is higher after the age of 40.
Symptoms:
- Severe pain during shoulder movements,
- Shoulder pain that wakes you from sleep,
- Restricted movement and loss of strength in the shoulder,
- Sounds coming from the shoulder during movement,
- Difficulty touching your back.
Treatment:
When you feel this kind of pain, do not wait for it to go away on its own. Waiting will weaken your shoulder further and cause it to degenerate.
At the İzmir Can Hastanesi Orthopedics Clinic, our specialist doctors who focus on the shoulder will plan your treatment after taking your history and performing a detailed physical examination.
Medication, intra-articular corticosteroid injection into the subacromial space and physical therapy may be the first-line treatment approaches. At our clinic, we shape and apply a treatment plan tailored to you with a multidisciplinary team approach. Surgery may be planned when there is no response to non-surgical treatments or in conditions involving the rotator cuff muscle group.
