NERVE ENTRAPMENTS
The most common nerve entrapment is the type known as carpal tunnel syndrome, which occurs at the wrist and causes numbness in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers of the hand. It is especially common in people who do intensive work with their hands and wrists. It is frequently seen in people who prune vines, use scissors or a computer mouse, and in industrial workers (using hand tools). Marked numbness together with a burning sensation that wakes the person up at night is common. An EMG is required for a definitive diagnosis. If the EMG shows a significant decrease in nerve conduction velocity, surgery is performed.
If the compression is not severe enough to require surgery, treatment with a wrist splint and medication is possible. A cortisone injection may be tried before surgery.
