Phakic Intraocular Lens Treatment

Phakic lens treatment (ICL) can be a suitable alternative in cases of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism that are not suitable for laser treatment. Successful results are achieved in high myopia and hyperopia with this reversible surgery; at Can Göz Kliniği, it is performed by doctors experienced in this field.

It is one of the methods that can be used in cases not suitable for laser treatment. In this technique, the eye is entered through an incision smaller than 2.5 mm; the eye’s own natural lens is left in place, and an additional intraocular lens is implanted. In patients with astigmatism, lenses that also correct astigmatism (toric lenses) can be used. Because the natural lens is preserved, the eye’s ability to focus up close is also preserved.

This lens placed inside the eye is transparent and made of a medical material that can remain in the eye for many years; nevertheless, regular eye check-ups are needed after surgery. After surgery, these lenses cannot be seen from the outside, and the patient does not feel the presence of the lens in the eye. The lens can be removed at the patient’s request.

It is preferred for patients over 20 years of age with refractive errors above 8–10 diopters of myopia or above 5 diopters of hyperopia. The surgery takes about 15 minutes per eye, and the patient has normal vision the next day. Rarely, complications such as residual refractive error, corneal edema, glaucoma or infection may occur. However, they can be corrected in a short time with appropriate treatment.

Not every patient may be suitable for this surgery. Patients’ occupation, age, social life, reading habits and intellectual level are also important in patient selection. Appropriate patient selection, the appropriate technique, the experience of the institution and the surgeon performing the operation, and a high-quality lens are important for satisfaction after surgery.
