Comprehensive Eye Examination

Ophthalmology2 min read

Our eyes, our window to the world, are the most complex organ in our body. In addition to tissues found elsewhere in the body, they also contain tissues unique to themselves. This intricate structure can be affected by many genetic and systemic diseases. Regular eye examinations are important for detecting these diseases, for which early diagnosis and treatment matter, even when there are no complaints.

In this examination;

  • Determination of visual acuity with and without glasses
  • Biomicroscopic examination
  • Refraction examination
  • Measurement of intraocular pressure
  • Retinal examination

are performed as standard. If necessary, the doctor may proceed to more detailed examinations and tests.

The eyes, which form a person’s window to the physical and emotional world, are organs that can be the focus of serious health problems from birth onwards. For example, it should be remembered that CATARACT, known as a disease of old age, can also be present in newborn babies.

Our eyes are among the organs most affected in chronic health problems, particularly diabetes, hypertension, tumors and vascular diseases. In fact, even the early diagnosis of many vascular and neurological diseases can be made through eye examinations. For example, detailed eye examinations can detect a person’s Alzheimer’s risk up to 17 years in advance.

Bearing in mind eye diseases such as glaucoma (eye pressure), which progresses very insidiously, causes no symptoms for a long time and can result in blindness, never neglect your routine eye examinations: at least once a year until your forties, and at least every six months after the age of forty. Signs such as eye redness, pain, watery eyes, difficulty seeing near or distant objects, letters or objects blurring into one another or being unable to see part of them, and squinting to see may be symptoms of a serious eye disease or a systemic disease. In such a case, you should see your eye doctor without delay.

What Do We Do During an Eye Examination?

  • First, we perform a Visual Acuity Test to assess distance and near visual acuity (in ophthalmology, we define these problems as refractive errors).
  • If there is a problem with clear vision, we use an Eyeglass Examination to assess whether you need glasses or, if you already wear them, whether your glasses are adequate.
  • We examine your eyelids, tear glands and tear ducts.
  • By examining your eye muscles, we assess whether you have problems such as strabismus and double vision.
  • We measure your eye pressure with automatic and manual devices to diagnose glaucoma at an early stage.
  • With a Biomicroscopic Examination, we evaluate the cornea, iris, lens and retinal layers of the eyeball in the finest detail.
  • With a Fundus Examination, we investigate the risk of conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, hypertension, brain tumors and other systemic diseases.
