The Link Between Diet and Colon Cancer

Certain foods that can trigger an inflammatory reaction in the body (inflammation) may increase the risk of large bowel (colon) cancer.

In a study published in JAMA Oncology, one of the world’s most prestigious medical journals, 121,000 patients were followed for 26 years, and participants were examined in terms of their eating habits and, among the foods they consumed, foods that cause an inflammatory reaction, consumption of red meat and processed meat products, sugary drinks and refined foods.

Eating foods that cause an inflammatory reaction in the body, known as a pro-inflammatory diet, was found to increase the risk of colon cancer by 44% compared with the group that ate healthily. Independently of all other cancer risk factors (low physical activity, high body mass index), a diet rich in processed meat products and red meat, refined sugar and refined foods, and poor in green leafy vegetables increases the risk of colon cancer.
